Sylvia Ann Messina of Scranton died Thursday at home following an illness. She was the widow of James Messina who died June 5, 2013.
Born in Dickson City, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Caroline Skibitski Stankiewicz. Prior to her retirement she was employed at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania and had previously worked in the dietary department of the University of Scranton. She was an avid reader. Sylvia will be deeply missed by her family and friends, a caring person always willing to help anyone in need, she had enough love to go around for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; our family will take comfort knowing she is at peace with our dad in heaven.
Sylvia’s family would like to thank Dr. Joseph Greco, and the staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for all their wonderful care.
Surviving are her children, Diane Messina, Dorothea and husband Joseph Gildea, Teresina and husband Stephen Moran, Charles Messina and wife Charisse, all of Scranton; four grandchildren, Crystal, Stephen, Teresina, and Kaitlyn; two great grandchildren, Cassandra, and Kelvin; a sister, Dolores Stankiewicz; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Stankiewicz , and Rev. Clarence Stankiewicz, SJ.
The funeral will be conducted Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church, 1309 W. Locust St. all attending the funeral are asked to proceed directly to church. Interment in Cathedral Cemetery will follow. Family and friends may pay their respects Sunday 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. At the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave.
