Joseph J. Piazza of Scranton died Saturday December 2, 2017 at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Anthony and Rose Alberico Piazza.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army and the United States Air Force. Prior to his illness, he was the long-time owner of Mistech Transmission in Scranton. The business continues to be operated by his Grandson, Jade.
Joe had a passion for running and at the age of 62 he ran his first marathon, and several others after that. He also enjoyed playing blackjack with his son, taking long walks with his daughter and dining out with family and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to his care givers, especially, Dawn Uscowskas, Debi Uskowskas, Mary Swartz, Joan Kozak and all the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
Also surviving are his wife, the former Mary Pinto, his son, Joseph Jr. and companion Dawn; daughter Linda and husband Richard Jones; two grandchildren, Jade Bonafade and his wife Lori, and James Melia; three great grandchildren, Giada and Nina Bonafede, and James Melia Jr.; a brother Gino Piazza and his wife Janice; a sister, Ann Marie Tierney and her husband John; his companion, Jean Preston, her son and daughter Casey Preston and Maura Lynett, his dog Bailey and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St. Interment with military honors will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects Thursday 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18702.
