Obituary for Eleanor Vitcavage

Eleanor Vitcavage
Eleanor Mary Vitcavage, 86, beloved wife of 67 years to Joseph Vitcavage, passed away Friday morning, January 5, 2018, at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton after a brief illness. She was born on May 3, 1931, the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances Ruchus Petcavage.

Born and raised in Scranton, Eleanor graduated from Central High School at the age of 16. Eleanor was a devoted wife and mother. She was a member of the Convent Guild/Womens’ Society and a faithful volunteer at St. Joseph’s Church in Scranton for many years, cleaning the church every Thursday and working at their annual flea market every year, among other events. Eleanor was recently honored with the Parish Service Award at Mary, Mother of God Parish for her years of dedicated service. Eleanor was an avid Scrabble enthusiast and, nearly every day, spent many hours around the kitchen table playing with her family.

Eleanor’s greatest accomplishment was raising her family. When her children were young, many neighborhood children would frequently congregate at “Mrs. V’s house” and spend their days there. She was known for her talent of baking and cooking favorite family recipes.

Her children brought much joy and adventure to her life. Survived by her son, Joseph (Sue) of Connecticut and daughter, Mary Ellen (Don) of New York, she treasured special moments with them. She was most proud of her grandchildren, Joseph (Kim) Reynolds, Matthew (Marianne) Reynolds, Daniel (Christy) Reynolds, Sarah (Howard) Kramer, Andrew Vitcavage and Eddie Vitcavage. Five great grandsons (Jack, Owen, Harrison, Finn and Matthew) completed her family circle and will miss their “Gigi”.

In addition to her family, Eleanor leaves her sister Joan Heckman of Scranton and brother Joseph (Mary Ellen) Petcavage of Bear Creek Township behind. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews and most especially, her niece, Mary Frances (Neil) Malatesta, who was like a daughter to her. Eleanor was recently predeceased by her beloved son, Paul.

The funeral will be conducted on Tuesday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc. 1030 N. Main Ave. with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 am in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Friends and family may call Monday from 4-7 pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Attn. Monsignor Rossi, 400 Michigan Avenue, Northeast, Washington, D.C. 20017 or Mary, Mother of God Parish, Scranton.
