Kaitlyn Michele Gildea, 23, of West Scranton, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 26,2018 at
home, surrounded by her family, after a courageous and inspiring battle with brain cancer.
Born in Scranton, on March 19, 1995, to parents Joseph 'and Dorothea (Messina) Gildea, she was a
graduate of West Scranton High School class of 2013 where she was a member of the Marching Invaders
Color Guard. She attended Lackawanna College and excelled as a Dean's List student. At the time of her
diagnosis she was attending East Stroudsburg University studying Digital Media Technology.
Kait spent her life putting everyone else's well-being ahead of her own. A champion of the underdog, she
had a tremendous impact on countless people. Kait was always listening music, never met a kitty she
didn't like, loved Charlie Chaplin and could recite the original IT movie word for word. We will remember
Kait for her strength, resilience, generosity and kindness. The loss is incredible, but her legacy will live on
in all of those who were lucky enough to know her.
She is survived by her parents, Joseph and Dorothea (Messina) Gildea of Scranton; a sister, Teresina
(Gildea) Robbins, and husband, Kenneth, of Rockville, MD; her God-Mother and Aunt, Diane Messina;
Uncle, Charles Messina, and wife, Charisse; Aunt, Teresina and husband, Stephen Moran; Uncle, Timothy ..
Gildea; cousins, Crystal, Stephen, Kasandra and Kelvin.
She is preceded in death by maternal grandparents James and Sylvia Messina, and paternal grandmother,
Her family would like to extend special thanks to Lehigh Valley Pediatric Hematology Oncology-Cedar
Crest, especially, Dr. Felipe Bautista, Dr. Lydia Boateng, Dr. Philip Monteleone, nurses Jessica, Anne
Marie, and Liz, and social workers Rose and Sloane for their exceptional care and attentiveness over the
last two years. We would also like to thank Katie, Kelly, Jessica and Gina from the Hackerman-Patz
House-Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest for becoming an extension of our family; Angel 34, for kind, genuine
support, easing the financial burden of living away from home, and delicious ICEEs; Jeanne, and the entire
team from Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassion and guidance through Kait's end of life care;
Jim Burch and the staff at the Police Foundation for encouraging Terri to work from Pennsylvania so
should could soak up as much time with Kait as possible; The Hampton Inn Montage Mountain, especially
Stacy, Lisa and Brandon; and, to all of our friends, family, neighbors and everyone who has been part of
#TeamKait - your support has carried us through our most difficult moments.
A very special thank you to Ed Roach, Michelle Lyles and Emily Cresho for helping Kait navigate her life
journey. We would also like to thank our dear friends, Donna Duffy, Jessica Lewis and Olivia Stokas for
their unwavering love and support.
Visitations for friends and family will take place Saturday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave. Scranton. It is requested that all attending, dress comfortably (she Picked out a sweater, leggings and slippers!).
